What is SailPoint?
SailPoint is an American identity security software company, founded in 2005 and headquartered in Austin, Texas, that sells identity governance and administration (IGA) software. SailPoint's products let large organisations control which employees, contractors, machines and AI agents can access which applications and data, and prove to auditors that every piece of that access is appropriate.
The word "SailPoint" is used three ways, and knowing which one someone means saves a lot of confusion:
The company
SailPoint, Inc. (Nasdaq: SAIL) — the software vendor. It builds and sells the products; it does not usually implement them itself at every customer.
The products
IdentityIQ (IIQ) and the SaaS platform once called IdentityNow, then Identity Security Cloud (ISC). "I work on SailPoint" in an Indian office almost always means one of these two.
The skill
On a resume or a Naukri search, "SailPoint" is shorthand for the ability to configure, customise and run these products — a specialised IAM skill with its own job titles.
SailPoint's own positioning in 2026 is that "identity is the foundation of security": attackers increasingly log in rather than break in, so the question "who has access to what, and should they?" has moved from an audit checkbox to a front-line security control.
What is SailPoint used for?
SailPoint is used to answer three questions for an organisation: who has access to what, whether they should have it, and what happens to that access when people join, move or leave. SailPoint software automates account creation and removal, runs periodic access reviews, blocks risky access combinations, and produces the evidence auditors ask for.
A concrete example makes it clearer. A new analyst joins a global bank's capability centre in Hyderabad. Without identity governance, someone raises tickets for Active Directory, email, the core banking application and a reporting tool, and the analyst waits a week. With SailPoint, the HR record created in a system such as Workday becomes an identity; birthright access is provisioned automatically on day one; when the analyst moves teams, the old access is removed as the new access arrives; and when they resign, every account is disabled within minutes of HR marking them as a leaver. Every one of those events is logged for the auditors.

What products does SailPoint sell in 2026?
SailPoint sells two core identity governance platforms: SailPoint IdentityIQ (IIQ), self-hosted software that enterprises run in their own data centre or private cloud, and a SaaS platform formerly called IdentityNow and then Identity Security Cloud (ISC). The naming is the part that trips learners up. SailPoint's cloud product was launched as IdentityNow, renamed Identity Security Cloud, and on 4 August 2026 SailPoint announced "SailPoint Human Fabric" as the evolution of Identity Security Cloud, sold together with Agentic Fabric as the SailPoint Identity Security solution. Indian job descriptions still say "IIQ", "ISC" and "IdentityNow", so search all three. Is SailPoint an IAM, IGA or PAM tool?
SailPoint is an identity governance and administration (IGA) tool, which is one branch of identity and access management (IAM). SailPoint is not a privileged access management (PAM) vault like CyberArk, and not a single sign-on or MFA tool like Okta or Microsoft Entra ID. Most large enterprises run SailPoint alongside those products, not instead of them.

Who owns SailPoint, and is it a public company?
SailPoint, Inc. has been a public company on the Nasdaq under the ticker SAIL since February 2025, when its initial public offering priced at US$23 a share and raised about US$1.38 billion. Private-equity firm Thoma Bravo, which took SailPoint private in a US$6.9 billion deal in 2022, was its main backer at that IPO.
The ownership history explains why the company looks the way it does today. SailPoint was founded in 2005 in Austin, Texas, and co-founder Mark McClain was leading it as CEO at the 2025 listing. Thoma Bravo first invested in 2014, SailPoint listed publicly for the first time in 2017, went private again in 2022, and returned to the market in 2025 with a business now weighted towards SaaS subscriptions. In India, the company operates through SailPoint Technologies India Private Limited, registered in Pune.

What the numbers mean for your career
SaaS ARR of US$847 million out of US$1.231 billion total means roughly 69% of SailPoint's recurring revenue now comes from the cloud platform — and roughly 31% still comes from IdentityIQ and other self-hosted licences. Who uses SailPoint?

SailPoint does not publish list prices; every SailPoint licence is negotiated privately and is usually priced per managed identity per year. Third-party procurement guides in 2026 estimate US$30–55 per identity annually for the SaaS platform at enterprise discounts, with implementation services adding 30–60% to first-year cost. Individuals cannot buy SailPoint for personal practice.

Is SailPoint a good career in 2026?
SailPoint is a solid career option in 2026 for IT professionals from administration, support, testing, GRC or Java backgrounds, because demand is steady and the skill is specialised. Naukri listed roughly 6,000 SailPoint vacancies in India in September 2026, and SailPoint's own recurring revenue grew 25% year on year to July 2026.
It is not the right path for everyone. SailPoint work is detail-heavy, compliance-driven and closer to enterprise process than to product engineering, and pure freshers find the first role harder to land than people with a few years of IT operations behind them.
