"Free SailPoint training" is a search that returns two very different things: a small number of genuinely free, genuinely useful resources published by SailPoint itself, and a much larger pile of pages that use the word "free" to collect your phone number. This guide separates them, resource by resource, with what each one actually gives you and where each one stops.
Quick answer: The genuinely free SailPoint training resources in 2026 are Identity University's free introductory courses, the free Identity Security Leader training path and credential (4.5 hours, open to everyone), SailPoint's public IdentityIQ product documentation, and the SailPoint Developer Community forum. All of them teach concepts well. None of them include a SailPoint IdentityIQ environment — IIQ has no public trial licence, and the installer is restricted to customer and partner organisations. Free study gets you the vocabulary; hands-on configuration needs an environment you can only get through an employer or a course that provides lab access.
If you are still deciding whether to learn the platform at all, start with what SailPoint IdentityIQ is and then come back here. If you have already decided and want the structured route, the live online SailPoint IIQ course at SailPoint Academy is the paid comparison point we reference honestly throughout — including where free wins.
What free SailPoint training resources actually exist in 2026?
Genuinely free SailPoint training resources in 2026 are: Identity University's free introductory courses and the free Identity Security Leader credential, SailPoint's public product documentation, the SailPoint Developer Community forum, and vendor webinars. All teach concepts. None of them give you a working SailPoint IdentityIQ environment to practise in.
Here is the full inventory, with what each resource is honestly good for and where it stops:
| Resource | Cost | Best for | Where it stops |
|---|---|---|---|
| Identity University — free catalog university.sailpoint.com |
Free | Introductory product training. Register an account, open the Catalog tab and filter Cost = Free. | Enrolments expire after six months (you can re-enrol and resume). Deeper technical courses are paid. |
| Identity Security Leader credential | Free | A 4.5-hour vendor-agnostic path on identity security strategy and careers, ending in a knowledge-credential exam and a shareable digital badge. | Vendor-agnostic by design — it is not IdentityIQ product training and will not teach you IIQ configuration. |
| IdentityIQ product documentation documentation.sailpoint.com |
Free | The single most underused free resource. Authoritative detail on every object, task and configuration screen in IIQ. | Reference material, not a course. It assumes you already have a system in front of you. |
| SailPoint Developer Community developer.sailpoint.com/discuss |
Free | Real implementation problems and how practitioners solved them. The best free source of authentic IIQ vocabulary. | Assumes working knowledge. Threads answer specific errors, not beginner sequences. |
| Vendor webinars and user groups | Free | Product direction, release changes, and certification-prep sessions run by SailPoint-certified experts. | Scheduled, not on-demand learning. Coverage is uneven across topics. |
| Third-party "free" video courses | Free (with a catch) | Some training companies publish several hours of genuine IIQ demo videos as a lead magnet. | Usually a curated preview of a paid course, and often built on an older IIQ version. Verify the version before trusting screens. |
| SailPoint Professional Certification exams | US$400–500 | Formal, employer-recognised validation from SailPoint Technologies. | Not free, and not a learning resource — an assessment you sit after learning elsewhere. |

Is SailPoint certification free?
No. SailPoint's free tier covers learning, not certification. The Identity Security Leader credential — a 4.5-hour vendor-agnostic training path — is free and open to everyone. SailPoint Professional Certification exams are not: SailPoint's own training FAQ puts them between US$400 and US$500, depending on the exam.
This is where most confusion starts, because two different words are doing two different jobs. A knowledge credential like Identity Security Leader is free, open to the public with no customer or partner requirement, and results in a badge you can post on LinkedIn. A Professional Certification is a proctored, paid exam tied to a specific product track.
And neither of those is the same as an institute certificate. A training provider — including us — can only issue its own certificate of completion. SailPoint Academy awards a SailPoint Academy certificate of completion, never an official SailPoint credential, and any institute that blurs that line is telling you something about its other claims. The full breakdown of what each document costs and proves is in our guide to SailPoint certification cost in India, and whether the paid exam repays itself at your career stage is covered in is SailPoint certification worth it in 2026.
The free credential is worth 4.5 hours of your weekend
For a career switcher with nothing identity-related on their CV yet, the free Identity Security Leader badge is the cheapest credible signal available. It will not get you an IdentityIQ job on its own — but it proves you started, and it gives you the vocabulary to hold a conversation in a screening call.
Can you download SailPoint IdentityIQ free to practise?
No. SailPoint IdentityIQ has no public trial licence and no free download. The identityiq.jar installer is available only through Compass to staff at SailPoint customer or partner organisations. This is the single hardest limit on free SailPoint learning, and no amount of free video content works around it.
This is not a rumour or an outdated policy — it is confirmed repeatedly by practitioners on SailPoint's own Developer Community. When a learner named Gouse Mohiddin asked for an IdentityIQ trial licence and installation package for a personal lab setup in March 2026, five separate practitioners replied with the same answer: the installer is restricted to customer and partner accounts on Compass. One reply put it bluntly — "access to key learning material is unfortunately limited to partners." A parallel thread asking whether IdentityIQ has a trial licence has accumulated over 2,600 views, and a "sandbox account for IdentityIQ" thread more than 3,000, which tells you how many people arrive at this wall.
The consequence is specific and worth stating plainly: you can read every page of the IdentityIQ documentation and still have never run an aggregation task, mapped an identity attribute, or launched a certification campaign. Employers interview for the second thing. We wrote about exactly what that practice looks like in SailPoint training with hands-on lab access, and the honest limits of going it alone are mapped module by module in can SailPoint be self-taught.

What changed in 2026: SailPoint Compass is retiring
SailPoint is retiring its Compass community. Compass went read-only on 15 August 2026, retires fully on 4 September 2026, and a new SailPoint resource hub launches in October 2026. Many free resources will be temporarily offline in between, so download the IdentityIQ guides you need before September.
This matters more to free learners than to anyone else. Compass has been the home of the IdentityIQ product guides, the IIQ wiki, the connector directory and a decade of solved forum threads — much of it reachable with a free registered account. SailPoint's announcement is explicit that during the gap between retirement and the October launch, "many resources will be temporarily offline while we complete the migration."
Compass switched to read-only. You can still browse, search and read every existing thread and guide, but new posts, replies and likes are disabled.
Compass is retired. SailPoint says it will keep hosting key resources and discussions on the Developer Community during the intermission.
A new centralised SailPoint resource hub and community experience launches. The exact date had not been published as of 21 August 2026.
Practical advice, and it expires: if there is an IdentityIQ product guide, wiki page or forum solution you rely on, save a copy now rather than in October. Bookmark developer.sailpoint.com as your interim home — that is where SailPoint has said the conversation continues.

Is "SailPoint training material PDF free download" worth chasing?
Mostly no. Search results for SailPoint training material PDF free download are dominated by document-sharing sites hosting institute syllabus outlines, not training content. A syllabus tells you what a course covers; it does not teach you. Three specific traps are worth naming before you download anything.
Trap 1 — The course outline dressed as course material
The most-downloaded "SailPoint training material" PDFs on document-sharing sites are institute brochures: a module list, a topic list, a duration. Useful for comparing syllabi across providers, worthless for learning. If a PDF is under about 15 pages and contains no screenshots or configuration walkthroughs, it is a sales document.
Trap 2 — Leaked customer implementation documents
Some circulating PDFs are real design documents from real enterprise IIQ implementations, uploaded by someone who should not have shared them. They often contain internal application names and role structures. Learning from a document that was never meant to be public is a poor habit to carry into a job where handling access data responsibly is the entire point.
Trap 3 — Exam dumps sold as "free certification material"
Files claiming to be SailPoint certification questions violate the candidate agreement you accept when you register for an exam. Using them puts a credential at risk of invalidation — and a certification you cannot defend in a technical interview is worse than no certification, because it invites questions you cannot answer.
The honest replacement for all three is free and better: SailPoint's own IdentityIQ product documentation. It is public, current, version-labelled, and vastly more detailed than any brochure PDF. If you want the same treatment for the cloud product, we covered it separately in can you learn SailPoint ISC for free. And if you are evaluating institutes rather than PDFs, run the checks in the 7-point check before you pay any IT training institute in India.
How far can free resources take you across the 14 IIQ modules?
Free resources realistically cover the conceptual half of a SailPoint IdentityIQ syllabus — roughly the first five of the 14 modules at a reading level. Application onboarding, rules, certifications, lifecycle events and custom workflows need a running environment, which free study cannot supply. Expect theory, not demonstrable skill.
Mapped against the 14-module IIQ curriculum we teach, the split looks like this:
Free study covers this well
IAM Overview, SailPoint Architecture, and the conceptual layer of Role Management, Policy Management and Risk Score. Documentation plus community reading genuinely teaches what these are and why enterprises need them.
Free study half-covers this
Application Onboarding, SailPoint Jobs, Configuration File, and Groups/Workgroups/Population. You can learn the vocabulary and the sequence, but you cannot demonstrate that you have run an aggregation or debugged a failed one.
Free study cannot cover this
Application Rules, Access Certification, Lifecycle Events, Custom Workflow, and Quick Link & Reporting. These are configuration and code against a live system — reading about a BeanShell provisioning rule is not the same as writing one that runs.
This is also where interview questions concentrate. Ask anyone who has sat an IIQ interview at a Big 4 firm or a BFSI global capability centre in Hyderabad, Bengaluru or Pune: the conversation moves to joiner-mover-leaver behaviour and certification campaign design within about ten minutes. Our collection of scenario-based SailPoint IIQ interview questions shows the level of specificity expected — and how little of it survives a purely theoretical preparation.
A free-first 30-day plan before you spend a rupee
Spend 30 days on free resources before paying for any SailPoint training. Week one: the Identity Security Leader credential. Week two: IdentityIQ product documentation. Week three: Developer Community threads. Week four: attend free demo sessions from two or three institutes and compare what they actually show you.
Earn the free credential and test your own interest
Register on Identity University, complete the 4.5-hour Identity Security Leader path, sit the free credential exam and claim the badge. Cost: nothing but a weekend. If the material bores you, you have saved yourself Rs. 25,000 and two months — that is a genuinely good outcome.
Read the IdentityIQ documentation on four objects
Applications, identities, roles and certifications. Do not read end to end — read those four sections properly and write your own one-paragraph definition of each. Being able to explain an Identity Cube in your own words is a real, testable milestone.
Follow ten real problems on the Developer Community
Pick ten recent IIQ threads and read them to the accepted solution. You will not understand everything — that is the point. You are learning what real work sounds like, and building the vocabulary that separates a prepared candidate from a memorised one.
Attend two or three free demos and compare honestly
Nearly every institute offers a free demo. Attend several. Ask each one the same question — "will I get a live IdentityIQ environment to configure, and who is teaching?" The answers vary far more than the marketing pages do.
By day 30 you will know three things you cannot know today: whether identity governance actually interests you, how much of it you can absorb on your own, and which paid option — if any — is worth your money. For a fuller version of the paid route, see our how to learn SailPoint IIQ roadmap, the honest comparison in live course vs Udemy, Coursera and Pluralsight, and where these skills lead in our IAM career paths guide.
For transparency about the paid comparison in this article: SailPoint Academy's live online SailPoint IdentityIQ course costs Rs. 25,000, runs 2 months across all 14 modules, is capped at 25 students, is taught by a lead trainer with 14+ years of enterprise IAM experience, and includes LMS recordings and placement assistance — assistance and career guidance, never a job guarantee. We would rather you spent the 30 free days first.
