IAM Jobs in 2026: Roles, Openings and Where to Actually Look

Search "IAM jobs" and you get four different jobs mixed into one result list, and counts that disagree by a factor of eight. This guide separates the lanes, puts dated opening figures for the US, UK and India side by side, gives pay by role, states the real remote share, and names the boards where identity roles are genuinely posted.

Two professionals shaking hands after an interview, illustrating hiring for identity and access management jobs in 2026

Type "IAM jobs" into a job board and the results look encouraging and unhelpful at the same time. Glassdoor returns tens of thousands of openings; Indeed, searching the same phrase more strictly, returns a few thousand. The listings mix an access-request analyst on a service desk with a privileged access architect who needs a decade of experience. Almost nobody explains which of those jobs you are actually qualified for, or where the rest of them are hiding.

Quick answer: IAM jobs are identity and access management roles responsible for controlling which people and machine accounts can reach which systems, and for proving it to auditors. Glassdoor listed 38,747 identity and access management openings in the United States in September 2026, Naukri listed 8,505 vacancies in India in September 2026, and IT Jobs Watch tracked 764 across the United Kingdom. The work divides into four distinct lanes — access administration, identity governance, privileged access management and access management — and choosing one lane before you start applying is the single decision that most changes your results.

This guide covers what identity work actually involves, the job titles and what each one means, dated opening counts and pay across three markets, the honest remote picture, and the boards where these roles are posted. If you want the step-by-step learning sequence rather than the market picture, the IAM career roadmap 2026 covers that ground, and IAM vs IGA vs PAM explained defines the terms used throughout this page.

What is an IAM job, exactly?

An IAM job is a security or IT role that controls which people and machine accounts can reach which systems, and produces the evidence auditors ask for. Identity and access management work covers joiners, movers and leavers, access requests and approvals, periodic access reviews, and separation-of-duties checks across an organisation's applications.

What makes identity distinct from the rest of cybersecurity is that the workload is set by regulation and audit, not by threat volume. Sarbanes-Oxley in the United States, UK GDPR and Financial Conduct Authority rules in Britain, APRA CPS 234 in Australia and India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act all require an organisation to demonstrate, on a schedule, that access is appropriate and reviewed. That obligation does not pause when security budgets tighten, which is why identity teams tend to be the last ones cut.

The practical consequence for a candidate is that identity work rewards process discipline and evidence-handling as much as technical depth. A great deal of the job is knowing precisely who approved what, when, and being able to show it six months later.

What are the main IAM job titles in 2026?

IAM job titles in 2026 cluster into seven recognisable roles across four lanes of work. The lanes are access administration, identity governance and administration (IGA), privileged access management (PAM) and access management. A single job board search for "IAM jobs" returns all four mixed together, which is why the same results page can show a one-year analyst role beside an eight-year architect posting.

This is the detail most career pages skip, and it costs candidates months. The four lanes use different tools, screen for different backgrounds and follow different progressions. Applying across all of them signals to an identity hiring manager that you have not yet chosen a specialism.

The non-coding lanes are larger than most newcomers expect. Analyst, business analyst and access review work is configuration-first, and the IAM business analyst role is a genuine destination rather than a waypoint. For the full progression from analyst through to architect, see the IAM career paths map.

How many IAM jobs are there in 2026?

Glassdoor listed 38,747 identity and access management openings in the United States in September 2026, up from 34,186 in July 2026. Naukri listed 8,505 IAM vacancies across India in September 2026. IT Jobs Watch tracked 764 identity and access management roles in the United Kingdom over its most recent rolling window. Demand is broad and growing in all three markets.

Why those US numbers disagree so violently. Glassdoor's 38,747 and Indeed's ~4,400 are not a contradiction and neither figure is wrong. Glassdoor matches broadly, counting any posting that mentions identity or access responsibilities anywhere in the description. Indeed's exact-phrase search counts only postings with "identity access management" in the title or close to it. The real market sits between the two, and the gap tells you something useful: most identity roles are not titled "IAM". They are titled by platform, by function, or by the parent security team — which is exactly why the search strategy in the where they are posted section matters more than the raw count.

For the longer trend, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 29% employment growth for information security analysts over the decade to 2034, against 3% across all occupations. Identity sits inside that category and is one of its more audit-insulated corners.

How much do IAM jobs pay in 2026?

IAM pay rises steeply with lane depth rather than with years alone. In the United States, identity analyst roles start around $75,000 and identity architects reach $180,000–$240,000 or more. In the United Kingdom, IT Jobs Watch records median advertised salaries of £45,000 for IAM analysts and £75,000 for IAM engineers. In India, Glassdoor reports an average of ₹21,00,000 for IAM architects.

IAM pay by role and market, 2026. US ranges from Start with Identity's 2026 IAM salary guide and ZipRecruiter; UK medians from IT Jobs Watch; India figures from Glassdoor India.

IAM Engineer (mid)$110,000–$150,000£75,000 median₹12,00,000–₹22,00,000
IAM Consultant$120,000–$165,000£60,000 median₹14,00,000–₹26,00,000
Senior IAM Engineer$150,000–$200,000£80,000–£95,000₹22,00,000–₹32,00,000
IAM Architect$180,000–$240,000+£95,000–£120,000₹21,00,000 average

Two figures worth quoting on their own. ZipRecruiter put the average US hourly rate for IAM roles at $54.99 as of 17 September 2026, with most falling between $43.03 and $68.75. Glassdoor India reports an average of ₹21,00,000 per year for IAM architects, with the 25th to 75th percentile band running from ₹20,00,000 to ₹55,00,000 — an unusually wide spread that reflects how much architect pay depends on whether the employer is a global capability centre or an IT services firm.

Salary disclaimer: These are market estimates, not guarantees. International salary figures are sourced from public job listings and salary aggregators including Glassdoor, ZipRecruiter and IT Jobs Watch, as listed in 2026. Actual compensation varies by employer, location, experience, and individual negotiation.

For deeper India-specific numbers broken down by platform, see the IAM consultant salary comparison for India.

Are IAM jobs remote in 2026?

Identity and access management roles are more remote-friendly than almost any other corner of IT in 2026. ECCU's 2026 remote cybersecurity jobs report found 58% of US cybersecurity roles were offered as remote or hybrid, up from roughly 45% two years earlier, while only 3% of all US job postings analysed in Q2 2026 were fully remote and 87% were fully on-site.

That contrast is the story. The broad return-to-office wave of 2025 and 2026 largely bypassed security hiring, because the talent pool is national rather than local and employers who insisted on a desk simply could not fill the roles. Glassdoor listed 3,737 remote identity and access management jobs in August 2026, and ZipRecruiter put average pay for remote IAM roles at $116,431 per year, with most between $95,500 and $143,000. For high-demand technical roles generally, remote postings in 2026 carried a 5–12% premium over equivalent local in-office positions.

Two honest caveats. Roles touching privileged production access, classified environments or strictly regulated data are the likeliest exceptions and are often onsite or tightly hybrid. And India's market is markedly stricter than the US on return-to-office — the remote and work-from-home identity jobs in India guide covers what is genuinely available there.

Where are IAM jobs actually posted?

Identity and access management roles are spread across general job boards, regional specialists and vendor community boards, and most are advertised by platform name rather than by the phrase "IAM". Searching a tool name such as SailPoint, Okta, CyberArk or Entra ID surfaces openings that a search for "IAM jobs" misses entirely, because the job title often names the product instead of the discipline.

One practical note that costs people interviews: the vendor community boards are underused. The SailPoint Developer Community runs a job board alongside active practitioner threads such as "Advice for Prospective SailPoint Engineers" and "Becoming a SailPoint Developer as an Analyst", where hiring managers read as well as post. A handful of applications there will reach a human faster than fifty on a general board.

What skills and tools do IAM jobs require?

IAM job descriptions in 2026 screen for three things: one identity platform in depth, the federation protocols, and directory fundamentals. The platforms cluster by lane — SailPoint IdentityIQ and Identity Security Cloud, Saviynt and Omada for governance; CyberArk, BeyondTrust and Delinea for privileged access; Okta, Microsoft Entra ID and Ping Identity for access management.

Underneath the platform, the constants are Active Directory and LDAP, and the protocols SAML, OIDC, SCIM and OAuth 2.0. Scripting requirements depend entirely on lane: Java and BeanShell for SailPoint IdentityIQ rules and workflows, PowerShell for Active Directory and Entra ID, Python for API and automation work. Analyst, business analyst and access review roles remain configuration-first — does SailPoint require coding covers where the line falls in practice.

On credentials, job postings most often name CompTIA Security+ at entry level, Microsoft SC-300 for Entra ID work, vendor exams for platform roles, and CISSP or CISM for senior and architect positions. CISSP is a poor first move below three years of experience. Employers weigh demonstrable platform work above certificates almost universally, which is why guided hands-on labs matter more than another exam badge.

If identity governance is the lane you pick, the module-by-module 14-module IIQ curriculum shows what employer-facing depth in a governance platform actually looks like, from application onboarding and connectors through role management, access certification and lifecycle events. The live online SailPoint IIQ course teaches that sequence with guided hands-on labs.

Which companies hire IAM professionals?

IAM hiring concentrates in three employer types worldwide: consulting and systems integrators, banking and financial services, and identity vendors themselves. In the United States the volume sits with Deloitte, Accenture, PwC, KPMG, EY, IBM and Optiv on the consulting side, and with banks and insurers including JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Experian on the enterprise side.

In the United Kingdom, identity hiring is dominated by BFSI — HSBC, Barclays, Lloyds Banking Group and NatWest — alongside the UK arms of the Big Four and public sector bodies including NHS organisations, all driven by UK GDPR and FCA obligations. In India, the largest employers are the IT services firms and global capability centres: TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Cognizant, HCLTech, and the India delivery centres of Deloitte, EY and Accenture, concentrated in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune. The identity governance employers hiring in Bangalore guide names the Bengaluru roster in detail, and country-specific pictures are in the US identity jobs guide and the UK identity jobs guide.

Employer and product names on this page are used descriptively to identify publicly advertised roles and widely used platforms as of September 2026. Can you get an IAM job with no identity experience?

Yes, at analyst level, and the most common route is not a career change at all — it is a relabelling. Service desk and Active Directory administration roles already involve creating accounts for new starters, disabling leavers and adjusting permissions. That is identity work performed under a different job title, and hiring managers recognise it immediately when a CV describes it in identity vocabulary.

The honest caveat is that demand is not evenly distributed across experience levels. Many of the highest-paying identity postings ask for six to ten years, and entry-level competition is sharper than the headline opening counts suggest. What converts is specificity: an analyst who can explain a joiner-mover-leaver flow and what an access certification campaign is for will outperform a candidate with a broader but vaguer security background.

Backgrounds that transfer particularly well include service desk and infrastructure support, Active Directory and Windows administration, GRC and internal audit, QA and testing, and application development. If you are weighing whether your existing years count, does your IT experience count when you switch to IAM works through the arithmetic by prior role.

How do you land your first IAM job?

Landing a first identity and access management role comes down to five decisions, in order: choose one lane, learn one platform properly, practise it in guided hands-on labs, restate your existing experience in identity vocabulary, and search job boards by tool name rather than by category.

1. Pick one lane. Governance, privileged access, access management or administration. Applying across all four reads as unfocused to identity hiring managers, and each lane screens for different evidence.
2. Learn one platform end to end. Pick whichever dominates job descriptions in your target market and go deep rather than sampling three. Breadth without depth is the most common CV failure in identity applications.
3. Practise in guided hands-on labs. Identity platforms are not learnable from documentation alone, because aggregation, correlation, provisioning and certification campaigns only make sense against a running system. This is the single most common gap flagged by practitioners on vendor community forums.
4. Rewrite your CV in identity vocabulary. "Created user accounts" becomes provisioning. "Removed access for leavers" becomes deprovisioning and lifecycle management. "Ran quarterly access audits" becomes access certification campaigns. Restate real work accurately — never invent experience. Sample identity CV bullet points by background shows the wording.
5. Search by tool name, not category. Run SailPoint, Okta, CyberArk, Saviynt and Entra ID as separate saved searches alongside "identity and access management". This one change surfaces the majority of roles that a category search never returns.

None of this is fast, and anyone promising otherwise is selling something. A realistic timeline from a related IT background to a first identity offer is six to twelve months of deliberate work. What it is not is a restart from zero — which is the assumption that keeps most qualified candidates out of a field that is actively short of them. Independent training providers, including SailPoint Academy, offer placement assistance and career guidance; no institute can guarantee a job, because hiring decisions belong to employers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Identity and access management is one of the steadier corners of cybersecurity in 2026, because the work is driven by audit and regulation rather than by budget cycles. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 29% growth for information security analysts over the decade to 2034, against 3% for all occupations. Glassdoor listed 38,747 IAM openings in the United States in September 2026 and 6,317 in India in August 2026. Demand is real, but it concentrates at the experienced end — many senior job descriptions ask for six to ten years.
Yes, at analyst level. The most common entry route into identity and access management is a service desk or Active Directory administration role, where you already handle new starters, leavers and permission changes — that is identity work under a different job title. Employers hiring IAM analysts screen for directory knowledge, ticket discipline and audit awareness rather than years in a named platform. Senior IAM engineer and architect postings are a different matter and routinely ask for six to ten years of hands-on experience.
More often than most IT roles. ECCU's 2026 remote cybersecurity jobs report found 58% of US cybersecurity roles were offered as remote or hybrid, up from roughly 45% two years earlier, while only 3% of all US job postings analysed in Q2 2026 were fully remote. Glassdoor listed 3,737 remote identity and access management jobs in August 2026. Roles touching privileged production access or regulated data are the most likely exceptions and are often onsite or strictly hybrid.
IAM job descriptions in 2026 most often name CompTIA Security+ for entry level, Microsoft SC-300 for Entra ID work, vendor credentials such as Okta Certified or SailPoint's Identity University exams for platform roles, and CISSP or CISM for senior and architect postings. CISSP is a poor first choice below three years of experience because it carries a five-year experience requirement. Employers generally weigh demonstrable platform work above certificates, and most postings treat certification as a tiebreaker rather than a gate.
An IAM analyst operates the identity process: access requests, joiner-mover-leaver tickets, access review campaigns and audit evidence, typically at zero to three years of experience. An IAM engineer builds the machinery behind it — application onboarding, provisioning workflows, connectors, rules and integrations — usually at three to seven years. The analyst answers who should have access; the engineer makes the system grant and revoke it automatically. Analyst to engineer is the most common progression in identity and access management.
Some do and many do not. IAM analyst, access review, audit and business analyst roles are configuration-first and need no programming. IAM engineer and developer roles in identity governance platforms do involve scripting — Java and BeanShell in SailPoint IdentityIQ, PowerShell for Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID, and Python for automation and API work. Knowing SAML, OIDC, SCIM and LDAP well matters more across the whole field than any single programming language.
